Year R

Listen and Speak

 

In Year R pupils will:

 

  • Sing simple songs in French

  • Play games using French words and actions

  • Use EYFS and KS1 “Take 10” materials to develop physical activity linked to French language acquisition

  • Learn how to say “hello” to their class teacher

  • Learn how to say “goodbye” to their teacher

  • Learn how to say “my name is ___”

  • Learn how to count to 10 in French (linked to their counting games and skills in Maths lessons)

  • Meet Camembear (the French Language Bear) who will help them to access new French words

  • Learn how to name some objects that they use everyday

     

     

    In EYFS, Year 1 and Year 2 the pupils will learn French through song, game, dance, story and repetition of common vocabulary. The emphasis will be on speaking and listening.

    Year 1

    Listen and Speak

     

    In Year 1 pupils will:

     

  • Sing simple songs in French

  • Play games using French words and actions

  • Use EYFS and KS1 “Take 10” materials to develop physical activity linked to French language acquisition

  • Learn how to say “hello” and “goodbye” to their class teacher

  • Learn how to say “my name is ___” and “I am ___ years old” to their friends

  • Learn how to count to 10 in French (linked to their counting games and skills in Maths lessons)

  • Continue to work with Camembear (the French Language Bear) who will help them to access new French words

  • Revise vocabulary from EYFS and learn how to name more objects that they use everyday

  • Learn the names for some colours and start to say an familiar object name with its colour

  • Create a simple display of the French they are learning using pictures and words to consolidate learning

    Year 2

    Listen and Speak

     

    In Year 2 pupils will:

     

  • Sing simple songs in French

  • Play games using French words and actions

  • Use EYFS and KS1 “Take 10” materials to develop physical activity linked to French language acquisition

  • Access the materials of the Year 3 scheme but at a speaking/listening level

  • Learn a range of simple greetings for people

  • Consolidate the numbers from 0 – 10

  • Consolidate the range of everyday objects from Year R and Year 1 and be able to count a number of these objects in French

  • Consolidate and extend the colours learned in Year 1 and link to familiar objects

  • Learn some simple classroom instructions in French

  • Continue to work with Camembear (the French Language Bear) who will help them to access new French words and link to the travels of Barnaby Bear and Comenius Bear (distant Bear cousins!)

  • Find out where France is in Europe and learn about famous French sports people

  • RE Link: Class Saint is St Therese of Lisieux

    Year 3

    Listen, Speak and Read

     

    In Year 3 pupils will consolidate and extend Year 2 learning:

     

  • Access the materials of the Year 3 purchased Scheme for specific grammar tuition

  • Themes to be taught will include

      • Greetings

      • Numbers 0 – 20

      • Colours

      • Classroom Instructions

      • Names of common objects in class

      • Names of fruits

      • Names of common foods

      • Days of the Week/Months of the Year

  • Cross Curricular themes will include

      • Locate France on a map of Europe/World

      • Begin to identify and locate the French speaking parts of the World

      • Learn a simple poem in French

      • Listen and respond to a short story in French

      • Listen to a Fairy Tale in French and compare

  • RE themes will include

      • Class Saint: St Bernadette

      • Learn about Lourdes/Pilgrimage/St Michael Garicoits

      • Learn the Sign of the Cross in French

      • Learn the Grace before meals in French

      • How French Catholics celebrate Christmas

        Year 4

        Listen, Speak, Read and Write

         

        In Year 4 pupils will:

         

  • Access the materials of the Year 4 purchased Scheme for specific grammar tuition (regard to verbs “to be” and “to go”, adjectives etc)

  • Consolidate all vocabulary from Year 3

  • Themes to be taught will include

      • Name parts of the Body

      • Numbers 0 – 30

      • French Playground Games/Rhymes/Action songs (link to singing playgrounds)

      • Names of common animals and zoo animals

      • Items of clothing

      • Members of the family

      • Hobbies

      • Sports

      • Days of the Week/Months of the Year/Seasons

  • Cross Curricular themes will include

      • Locate France on a map of Europe/World and locate Paris. Find out facts about Paris for a French display

      • Identify and locate the French speaking parts of the World

      • Begin to explore differences between different regions in France

      • Find out about France in the News!

      • Listen to the story of the Giant Radish (in French) and compare with the Giant Turnip (UK)

  • RE themes will include

      • Learn the Sign of the Cross in French

      • Learn the Grace before meals in French

      • Learn the Grace after Meals in French

      • How French Catholics celebrate Easter

        In Year 5 pupils will:

         

  • Access the materials of the Year 5 purchased Scheme for specific grammar tuition (regard to verbs “to be” and “to go”, adjectives, connectives, prepositions etc)

  • Consolidate all vocabulary from Year 4

  • Themes to be taught will include

      • Buildings and shops

      • Following directions

      • Numbers 0 – 50

      • Telling the Time

      • Days of the Week/Months of the Year/Seasons

      • Making comparisons

      • Naming more food and drink

      • French meal times

      • Weather

      • Where do you come from? Where do you live?

      • Daily life in France for a 10 year old

  • Cross Curricular themes will include

      • Identify and locate the French speaking parts of the World – why is French spoken there – history/geography links

      • Investigate French foods and customs/traditions

      • Find out about famous French artists and musicians

      • Listen to the story of Cendrillon and compare with Cinderella

      • Bastille Day – Investigate and make a presentation

  • RE themes will include

      • Learn the Sign of the Cross in French

      • Learn the Grace before meals in French

      • Learn the Grace after Meals in French

      • Learn the Hail Mary in French

      • Famous French Saints – St Joan of Arc, St Vincent de Paul, St John Vianney etc

        Year 6

        Listen, Speak, Read and Write

         

        In Year 6 pupils will:

         

  • Access the materials of the Year 6 purchased Scheme for specific grammar tuition (regard to verbs “to be” and “to go”, adjectives, connectives, prepositions etc)

  • Consolidate all vocabulary from Year 5

  • Themes to be taught will include

      • Classroom routines

      • Numbers 0 – 100

      • Telling the Time

      • Days of the Week/Months of the Year/Seasons

      • Asking questions/making requests

      • Consolidate family members

      • Occupations and the world of work in France

      • Weather

      • Where do you come from? Where do you live?

      • Transport and Travel

  • Cross Curricular themes will include

      • Festivals around France – Pentecost Feria (Nimes), Festival of Lights (Lyon), Carcassone Festival

      • Investigate French foods and customs/traditions

      • Find out about famous French scientists

      • Listen to La Fontaine Fables and respond

      • Cannes Film Festival/Tour de France – Investigate and make a presentation

  • RE themes will include

      • Learn the Sign of the Cross in French

      • Learn the Grace before meals in French

      • Learn the Grace after Meals in French

      • Learn Hail Mary in French

      • Learn Our Father in French
