Baselines information for parents

As part of your child’s start in Reception, they will take part in the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA). This is a short, interactive assessment carried out one-to-one with a teacher during the first six weeks of the autumn term.

The purpose of the RBA is to provide a starting point to measure your child’s progress throughout their time in primary school. It focuses on:

  • Early maths skills – such as counting, recognising numbers, and simple problem-solving.
  • Early literacy skills – including listening to stories, recognising sounds, and understanding spoken language.

The assessment is designed to be fun and engaging, using practical tasks and picture-based activities. Children often don’t even realise they’re being assessed—it feels like a normal part of their learning.

There is no pass or fail,  Instead, the information helps schools understand how best to support each child’s learning journey.

If you have any questions about the RBA, please feel free to speak to a member of the Reception team.
