St Columba’s is a Catholic school with Christ’s teachings of love, peace and justice at the heart of all we do

Intent

By the time our pupils leave in Year 6, we want them to have developed the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills they need in order to become healthier, more independent and more responsible members of society.  We encourage our children to play a positive role in contributing to the life of our school and the wider community.  In doing so, we help to develop their sense of self-worth.  We teach them how society is governed and ensure that our children have the opportunity to experience the process of democracy through participation in School Council.  We aim to make pupils aware of their rights and responsibilities. They learn to appreciate what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multi-cultural society.  At St. Columba's, we strive to develop our children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and this is fundamental to our beliefs as a Catholic school.By the time our pupils leave St Columba’s, we want them to:

 Know and understand what is meant by a healthy lifestyle

• Be aware of safety issues and to know how to stay safe

• Understand what makes a good relationship with others

• Have respect for others

• Learn how to be thoughtful and responsible members of their community and their school

• Become active members of a democratic society

Implementation

To achieve this, each class from Reception through to Year 6 follows the Life to the Full programme which brings together RHE, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning.

Impact

The Life to the Full programme of work provides our school with an effective curriculum for Relationship and Health Education (RHE). Life to the Full is organised into 3 modules; The Life to the Full programme of work provides our school with an effective curriculum for Relationship and Health Education (RHE).

Life to the Full is organised into 3 modules;

• Created and loved by God
• Created to love others
• Created to live in community

Children are encouraged to develop the vocabulary and confidence to clearly articulate their thoughts and feelings. They know when and how they can seek the support of others. This has a positive impact on the whole child as they learn to build self-esteem and contribute positively to the wellbeing of those around them. We supplement our Life to the Full curriculum with key lessons from the Jigsaw curriculum, to ensure our children receive a full and progressive RHE education.Beyond the planned programme for RHE education in Life to the Full sessions our curriculum also provides children with a variety of experiences that have the potential to promote their personal, moral, social and cultural development.
