Science Intent at St Columba’s

Our intention at St. Columba’s is that all our children, irrespective of disadvantage and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) develop a lifelong love of Science, have a strong understanding of THEIR world and are excited about the endless possibilities of Science. It is important that the children in our school experience a curriculum that not only highlights but celebrates the diversity within our world. Children with special educational needs are encouraged to access all aspects of Science and individual needs of all children are taken into consideration. Teachers adapt resources to ensure the curriculum is accessible to all.

During Science lessons, children gain an understanding of scientific processes and also understand the use and implications of Science, today and for the future; through practical, hands on experiences. At St Columba’s, scientific enquiry is at the heart of our teaching with investigations embedded in each unit. With an increased focus on working scientifically, children are encouraged to become independent learners whilst developing a range of skills such as observing, planning and carrying out investigations. Children are encouraged to use a variety of approaches to ask and answer relevant questions, provide explanations, make predictions and develop their understanding of cause and effect.
