St Columba’s is a Catholic school with Christ’s teachings of love, peace and justice at the heart of all we do

Writing Intent

At St. Columba’s, we have created a high-quality, fully inclusive writing curriculum, which engages, inspires and challenges all pupils, irrespective of disadvantage and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Children with special educational needs are encouraged to access all aspects of learning during lessons and the individual needs of all children are taken into consideration. Teachers carefully plan and adapt lessons and resources to meet the needs of all children, enabling them to learn and develop new skills to become confident and fluent writers.

At St Columba’s, English is a vital part of our curriculum, encouraging children to become articulate communicators and deep thinkers about the world around them. Exposure to and immersion in quality texts helps to develop a shared culture and a life-long love of writing. All texts are chosen to instil these core aims. It is our aim to develop the children’s English skills to become literate and independent learners in school and in society and for all our children to have an interest in words and their meanings; develop a growing vocabulary in spoken and written forms; develop their powers of imagination, inventiveness and have a suitable technical vocabulary to articulate their responses.
