St Columba’s is a Catholic school with Christ’s teachings of love, peace and justice at the heart of all we do

French (MFL) Intent

At St. Columba’s we know that learning a foreign language provides an opening to other cultures and differing ways of life. Therefore, we strive to create a high quality languages education which will foster pupils’ curiosity about the large and rich culture of France and deepen their understanding of this part of the world. At St. Columba’s we are committed to providing an inspiring and fully inclusive MFL Curriculum to all our pupils, irrespective of disadvantage and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Pupils with special educational needs are encouraged to access all aspects of learning during lessons and the individual needs of all pupils are taken into consideration.

French teaching - from Year 3 through to Year 6 - will enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and respond to others, both in speech and in writing. Learning French at St. Columba’s will provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries – giving children more opportunities and more experiences of the wider world. There is also the opportunity for Years 1 and 2 to begin their language learning through an after school club held weekly.
